Michael Smith has been chief executive officer of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group since October 2007. Prior to this Smith has held a variety of posts in the Asia Pacific region during his 29-year career, such as president and CEO of HSBC, chairman of Hang Seng Bank, global head of commercial banking for the HSBC Group and chairman of HSBC Bank Malaysia. His appointments have spanned commercial, institutional and investment banking, planning and strategy, operations and general management. Smith is a member of the Asia Business Council, the Visa International Senior Client Council, the Business Council of Australia and the Australian Bankers’ Association Council. He is also a member of the Chongqing Mayor’s International Economic Advisory Council, the Shanghai International Financial Advisory Council and a Fellow of The Hong Kong Management Association.
