Khandelwal was the chairman of India’s state-owned Bank of Baroda from 2005 to 2008 and is known for taking over an ailing bank and putting it back on a solid footing. Relying on his experience in human resource development, he changed the culture of unionisation and employee apathy at the bank, something his predecessors had grappled with, with little success. Not only was he successful in changing the "lazy banking reputation" associated with Indian state-run banks in general by launching an aggressive marketing campaign, but also played a major role in implementing the bank’s core banking infrastructure and developing its stockbroking and wealth management businesses.
